Flight Dance Team Auditions

Audition Info:

Date:  Saturday, June 15th

Time: 12 pm - 2 pm

Location: C.R.O.W. Center for the Performing Arts - 3120 Hwy 101 in Florence.

Auditions are open to all youth - ages 11+.  Previous dance experience is required.

The 2019-2020 team will be selected by a panel of judges, including C.R.O.W. Board Members, Dance Teachers, and Flight Director, Melanie Heard.

Participants should bring ballet or jazz shoes, and water in an enclosed container.

Audition Update from Melanie: We will be learning a short combination that requires jazz or ballet shoes for the audition. I'd also like to teach a very short tap combination, so if you have tap shoes, please bring them!

A dance combination will be taught at the audition, and team members will be selected based on:

  1. Technique

  2. Personality/Attitude/Teamwork

  3. Stage Presence

  4. Ability to quickly learn choreography

Please wear dance attire to the audition.  No baggy attire, please.

Participating in Flight is a big commitment.  It is important that you are aware of our expectations PRIOR to auditioning:

  • Dancers must be 11 years old by the first day of practice – July 9th.

  • Flight is an annual program, and the team is required to re-audition each year.  Any dancer who was on the previous year's team is expected to re-audition in order to continue the next year.  Dancers must commit to being on the team for the entire year.

  • Cost to participate in Flight for 2019-2020 is $425* (new members/with new jacket) or $365 (returning members/no new jacket) for one year.  Tuition may be paid in 2 installments over 2 months. First payment is due on first day of practice (July 9th).   Jacket is required for all dance team members.

  • *PLEASE NOTE: This year, the team will vote on whether or not to get new jackets in a hooded style.  If the team votes “yes,” all parents must pay the $425 amount for the 2019-2020 team.

  • Some half and some full scholarships are available for those with financial need.

  • NEW FOR 2019-2020:  The Flight Dance Team will be performing a challenging tap section in C.R.O.W.'s production of Mary Poppins - which will be performed April 13-26, 2020 at the FEC.  This is not optional.  This means that dancers are required to attend any pertinent MP rehearsals.  To be considered for other roles in the show, Flight Dancers must still attend the audition for Mary Poppins in mid-January.  Should a Flight dancer be cast in a leading role, it will outrank the dance section.  Flight dancers must also attend "tech week" for Mary Poppins and all performances.  If you have questions about this new requirement, please feel free to talk with Melanie.

  • Flight families are responsible for purchasing 3-4 costumes per year (approx per costume cost is $50-$60).  Additional accessories may be needed, but costs will be kept as low as possible.

  • Flight dancers must provide 4 pairs of their own dance shoes (pink ballet, black tap oxfords, lyrical foot undies, & black jazz shoes). Dance shoes must be kept in "performance shape" (i.e.-No holes).  Additional shoes may be required as choreography is completed throughout the year (TBD).

  • Dancers must wear all black (or flight team) dancewear to all practices.  There will be official team wear available for purchase.  Rehearsal attire must be meant for dancing.  (No jeans, etc.)

  • Dancers must provide "performance shape" tights and leotards as needed to complete costumes.  Undergarments are also required, as needed.  Dancers who require a dance bra, must purchase and wear one.

  • Girls must pull hair back for all practices.  No Exceptions!

  • Flight Dancers who are unprepared for practices (i.e.- Don't bring their proper shoes, don't pull hair back, or don't wear all black dance clothing) will receive a "broken feather."  2 "broken feathers" = One Absence.  Broken feathers may also be issued for poor behavior.

  • During rehearsals for the Spring musical and Holly Jolly Follies, practices will end at 6:15.  Additional practices may be added as needed.

  • Dancers may not miss more than 6 practices in a year.  (Summer absences will be counted as regular absences).  If a dancer is tardy (more than 15 minutes) or leaves more than 15 minutes early without special permission, it will count as a "broken feather" or 1/2 absence.

  • Practices will be held most Tuesdays, July, 2019 -May, 2020, from 4:15-6:30.  There will be no practices during Tech Week for C.R.O.W.'s Spring Musical, nor during the month of December (following the Holly Jolly Follies).  Director may cancel an occasional additional practice as needed.

  • Flight dancers are required to enroll and participate in at least one other dance class (and maintain participation throughout the year – Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring sessions).  There are no classes or practices from mid May-end of June, 2020.  It is strongly recommended that Flight dancers take more than one additional class outside of Flight.

  • There may be master classes and workshops offered throughout the 2019-2020 term.  These workshops will be taught by various instructors in an effort to broaden technique, increase stamina, and build overall skills.  Although "optional"- these workshops will be strongly encouraged.

  • Flight dancers will be provided with various performance opportunities throughout the year, including The Holly Jolly Follies, C.R.O.W.'s Spring Dance Showcase, Elks Christmas Party, Rhody Pageant, and misc. community events.   There is a strong possibility that the 2019-2020 team will be invited to attend a competition in Portland in February of 2020.  This will be dependent on the team's readiness at the time.

  • Performances are mandatory, and cannot be missed or you will be dismissed from the team.

  • Dancers who gossip, bring down fellow team members, are rude to teachers, use profanity, are frequently unfocused, or exhibit other "unsportsmanlike" behavior may be dismissed at any time, with no refund.  The Flight team is expected to behave as role models for younger students, and will remain completely professional at all times.

  • Flight Dancers are expected to follow all C.R.O.W. rules (as applicable) found on C.R.O.W.'s Code of Conduct.  You can locate this document on the C.R.O.W. Website under “Forms and Guidelines.”

  • Dancers who cause any problems may be removed from the team at any time, at the discretion of the Director.   There are no refunds for dancers who do not complete the year for any reason.

  • IMPORTANT! By committing to the team, Flight Dancers are agreeing to put the team first, above all other commitments.  Participation in sports, extra-curricular activities, auditions, or other classes at other locations can never be prioritized over Flight practices/ performances/ etc.  Flight must always be your first priority.  By auditioning, you are stating that you have read, understand, and agree to all of the rules of participation.
